Fitness Gyms
Fitness gyms...how do you find the right one...let's review several... World Gym World Gym is definitely more of a "gym" than a club. They usually have a great hard-core weightroom with all the equipment you'll need. It's nice too because they typically have several of each machine, or else a variety of machines focusing on the same exercises. This is handy when it’s busy or you need to hit a muscle from a different angle. It’s also useful when you have an injury you are trying to work around. World Gym will also have a full complement of dumbbells. By “full” I mean one pound, two pounds, 3, 5, 7.5, 8, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, etc on up to at least 100 pounds (for the men!) The cardio area will vary from gym to gym. Some World Gyms have fantastic cardio areas with state-of-the-art equipment. You really need to check out the club where you will be working out. It’s also a good idea to go at the exact times/days that you’ll be there and make sure there is ample equipment. I’ve been to some gyms where it was very humid in the cardio area; it was hard to see the TVs; it was just too busy; and the equipment was old. So, definitely check it out for yourself, because if you don’t like the cardio area or don’t feel comfortable in it, then you will be less likely to do your cardio. And we all know we don’t need any more excuses to keep us away from the gym! World Gym usually has decent locker rooms. And, most importantly, you can usually rent a locker. This is HUGE. Every little bit helps! The more convenient you can make it for yourself, and the less “stuff” you have to lug around, the better. Sometimes they will even have a sauna and/or steam room. Most gyms probably won’t have a whirlpool, but then again, check your individual club. I did go to a World Gym in Texas that actually also sported a pool. World Gym often offers a juice bar. This is great because of the convenience factor. Research shows that you have a one hour window after working out to refuel. So, a quick protein shake from the juice bar can do wonders toward keeping you on track. Many of the juice bars even offer food, drinks, and coffee. Classes are also available. While they may have a decent offering, the real emphasis at a World Gym will most likely b on weights. If you love classes or have a crazy schedule and can never find a class time that works for you, you may want to consider a different gym. A “fitness club” may be just what you’re looking for as they tend to put a lot more emphasis on group exercises and classes. Virtually all gyms these days will offer personal training, child care, and nutritional counseling. Of course, these aspects will vary from gym to gym. The website will show which gyms are in your area and list phone numbers for each location. You can even join online!
Gold's Gym
Gold’s Gym is very similar to World Gym. It was started in Venice, California back in the 1970s by Joe Gold. Gold’s is very “hands-on” in terms of helping you achieve your goals. They are very well-rounded in that they offer, of course, weights and stellar cardio equipment, but also extensive classes like yoga and pilates. They also have cycling, group training, and even martial arts. The focus of Gold’s is on developing strength; physically, mentally, and personally. The consider the whole body; physical and otherwise.
I have visited numerous Gold’s Gyms and been impressed with almost all of them. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely can differ by location and some are not truly up to par…but the ones that are a good representation of Gold’s Gym are fantastic!
Usually, when you walk into one of the newer Gold’s Gyms, you will feel an immediate excitement and lots of positive energy. The facilities are super modern and often even a little “industrial”. An abundance of flat screen TVs pump out music videos with a non-stop motivating beat. You may not even need your headphones to do cardio – it’s that good.
The cardio area is typically well appointed. State-of-the-art equipment is often leased, so gyms are always able to provide you with the latest and greatest cardio selection.
Gold’s will have all the weight equipment you need too. They really do focus on the whole body exercise experience, but they definitely have all the gear if you are into hardcore weight training. I’ve always found Gold’s Gym very motivating since it seems like most people there are already in shape. I personally think it’s better to be in an atmosphere where everyone around you in working toward the same goals you are.
All in all, Gold’s Gym is my number one pick. However, there may not be one located in your city. So, if you are one of the lucky ones and have a facility near by, go for it! They have a great website at
