Fitness Supplement Guide

Fitness supplements can sometimes give you that "edge" that you need...let's talk about some of the most worthwhile ones.

Protein - This is probably the most useful supplement of all. It may also be the most widely used. Protein usually comes in a powdered variety. You can choose from many flavors including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and cookies and cream. Usually, you will mix a scoop or two of protein powder with milk, juice, water, yogurt, or oatmeal. It can add a lot of great flavor to an otherwise bland meal while at the same time giving your protein intake a huge boost.

Since you should really be getting 25-35 grams of protein every three hours or so, it becomes difficult to continuously find new and easy sources of protein. The powdered versions are perfect fix for this dilemma. They are quick, convenient, easy to measure, a snap to bring with you, and readily absorbed by your body.

My personal favorite protein powder is by ”Champion Nutrition Pure Whey Protein Stack in Chocolate”. It mixes easily with water, and if you mix it instead with cold skim milk, it is FANTASTIC.

Another one that I like to mix with my oatmeal is ”Fresh Cinnamon Roll”. The reason I like this with oatmeal is probably obvious...it’s tasty! My fiance really likes ”Muscle Milk Light Vanilla Flavor” with his oatmeal.

There are also sports drinks which contain protein. Check your supplement stores for new items, but one of my old standbys is ”Isopure”. Isopure has 40 grams or protein with zero carbs and zero fat. Sometimes I’ll drink half an Isopure at a time because it breaks nicely into two servings of protein. For more information on where to purchase supplements, visit the page under "Fitness Store" called "Supplements".

Vitamin and Mineral Supplements - Why should you take a vitamin/mineral supplement? It’s hard to get all the nutrients you need from food alone. It’s especially important if you don’t regularly eat a variety of foods. Vitamin pills/liquids are designed to balance out the nutrients you need and to supplement your food intake.

I like to take either a “pre-natal” vitamin or an extra-potency version for people who work out or for those who are stressed. I also have a liquid version on hand. If you’re not a fan of swallowing pills, you can also obtain chewable vitamins for adults. ”Centrum” makes great liquid and chewable vitamin formulas.
